19th Century Bosun's Persuader.
The bosun's persuader was a type of weighted club or cosh, often made with lead weights at the ends and a shaft covered in knotted cord or thread, used by boatswains (bosuns) in the Royal Navy to discipline sailors and during press-gang operations to enforce compliance.
Also known as a bosun's club, start, or cosh, these items were designed to be used for both minor injuries and to render someone unconscious, highlighting the brutal reality of maritime discipline and recruitment in past centuries.
This example dates from the early to mid 19th Century and is in an overall very good condition except it is missing the leather or cord thong from the bottom.
The photographs are of the actual item and form part of the description.
