A highly collectible and complete piece of World War I Trench Art.
This unique pocket writing set is expertly crafted from two spent rifle cartridges that slide together to form a dual-ended traveling pen and pencil combo.
The upper brass casing features an intricate, crisp relief carving of the historic Reims Cathedral (Notre-Dame de Reims), a iconic symbol of French resilience during the Great War.
The lower casing features a raised ornamental banner bearing the name "REIMS".
Unlike most empty examples found today, this piece retains both of its original, matching internal inserts:
One end houses a traditional metal dip fountain pen nib set into a brass sleeve.
The opposite end holds an original thick-lead graphite pencil core.
Both inserts utilise the authentic bullet tips as functional pull-handles to smoothly remove them from the casings
This item is in excellent antique condition lightly polished but still retaining some aged patina.
The details on the cathedral facade remain sharp and unworn and the pieces slide apart exactly as intended.
length: 6.6" (170mm)
