This is the Royal Naval Handbook of Parade and Rifle Drill, also known as B.R. 1834.
Published in 1949 by His Majesty’s Stationery Office (HMSO) for the Admiralty's Gunnery and Anti-Aircraft Warfare Division, this first edition manual provided standardised instructions for naval personnel.
The manual was written for Flag Officers, Captains, and Commanding Officers to ensure uniformity in training and discipline across the Royal Navy.
It emphasizes that impeccably performed ceremonial parades inspire unity and "conquer fear" by turning individuals into a single, obedient group.
Key subjects covered include:
- Squad and Rifle Drill: Basic formations (like three ranks) and the timing of movements, often aided by tools like metronomes and drums.
- Ceremonial Procedures: Instruction for funerals, guards of honour, and the parading of the White Ensign.
- Specialised Drill: Sword, cutlass, and platoon drills, as well as procedures specific to use on board ships.
