The British Pattern 37 Mark III Basic Pouch is a vertical, rectangular ammunition pouch introduced in 1942 to improve upon earlier designs, specifically to accommodate the longer magazines of the Sten machine carbine.
The Mark III was lengthened by approximately ½ inch (to about 10 inches total) compared to the Mark II to allow the lid to snap shut when carrying Sten gun magazines.
The Mark III was designed as a "universal" pouch capable of carrying various loads depending on the soldier's role:
- Magazines: Two Bren gun magazines or five 32-round Sten gun magazines.
- Ammunition: Up to 50 rounds of .303 ammunition in chargers and bandoliers.
- Ordnance: Up to four No. 36M Mills Bomb grenades, smoke grenades, or 2-inch mortar bombs.
In a good used condition dated 1942 and stamped with the manufacturer "J. & A. H" J. & A. Hillman.
This pouch is in an overall good condition with some staining in places.
