Obsolete Calibre Canadian .577 Snider-Enfield Percussion Breech-loading Cavalry Carbine.
This is the cavalry carbine variant of the .577 Snider–Enfield breech-loading rifle dated 1868.
The American Jacob Snider invented this firearm action, and the Snider–Enfield was one of the most widely used of the Snider varieties.
The British Army adopted it in 1866 as a conversion system for its ubiquitous 1853 Pattern Enfield muzzle-loading rifles, and used it until 1874 when the Martini–Henry rifle began to supersede it.
Canada began transitioning to the Enfield Snider breech-loading rifle in early 1867, with formal orders issued on February 26, 1867, for regiments to exchange their Pattern 1853 Enfield muzzle-loaders for the new system.
By 1869, around 82,000 had been shipped to Canada, making it the standard military weapon.
The Snider was gradually replaced by the Martini-Henry in the late 19th century, although it was still used by some Canadian units until the late 1880s/early 1890s.
This weapon contains numerous markings as well as the Canadian War Department Mark (DC) and all parts work as they should.
The barrel is approximately 19.5 inches and the total length is 38 inches.
This carbine is in excellent condition with expected pitting to the metal parts and some minor knocks to the wooden parts.
The tiger stripe pattern remains clear across the gun and all markings are visible.
