An exceptional, 100% original World War II British Army Ordinary Ranks (O.Rs) Field Service Cap (commonly referred to as a side cap or forage cap).
Introduced alongside the 1937 Pattern Battle Dress, this peakless cap was the standard working dress headwear for British soldiers throughout the majority of the Second World War.
This particular example is an exceptionally rare, highly sought-after larger size 7 ⅝.
Finding surviving wartime headwear above size 7 ½ is incredibly difficult.
Manufactured by L. Silberston & Sons in 1943—the final year before the British Army transitioned to the beret-style General Service cap.
The khaki serge wool is in excellent, clean condition with a rich texture.
It retains excellent structure with minimal flattening or distorting to the crown and side curtains. (Please see photos for a close-up of the weave and button detailing).
The interior lining is beautifully preserved with no heavy sweat staining, rotting, or severe discolouration.
The manufacturer text and date stamp remain fully visible and completely legible.
Excellent vintage condition.
The photographs are of the actual item and form part of the description.
