A WWI 28th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Artists Rifles) Cap Badge.
In a very good condition.
Brass with slider to the rear though slider needs straightening.
This unit was established in 1860 as the 38th Middlesex (Artists) Rifle Volunteer Corps during a major French invasion scare.
It was uniquely composed of painters, sculptors, architects, musicians, actors, and writers.
Its first elite commanders included renowned painters Henry Wyndham Phillips and Frederic Leighton.
During World War I, the battalion became an exceptionally high-quality officer training unit, producing thousands of officers for other regiments.
Famous members who served in its ranks include the poet Wilfred Owen, illustrator Arthur Rackham, and playwright Noel Coward.
After various re-designations, the unit was disbanded in 1945 but was resurrected in 1947 to form the nucleus of the modern 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles)..
